Indian Hills Winery has had a busy couple of days. With the help of family and friends, the Cayuga and LaCrescent grapes have been harvested. For those familiar with the vineyard, this represents the plot of grapes to the left of the road as you come up the hill. Wednesday evening the group picked 1137 lbs of LaCrescent and 1837 lbs of Cayuga for a total pick of 1.49 tons for the evening. The evening started hot and sweaty and ended with everyone swatting mosquitoes. We called it a night around 8:45 when we could no longer see or deal with the biting insects. We started again early Thursday morning (some earlier than others) to finish up the Cayuga, picking another 1490 lbs to add to the previous night’s pick. Altogether, we harvested 3328 lbs of Cayuga which is an increase of about a ton from last year. Martie, Tom Buttry and David Sifford worked in the fermentation room all day today pressing the juice so the yeast could be added this evening to start the wine making process. The 1137 lbs of LaCrescent yielded about 70 gallons of juice whereas the 3328 lbs of Cayuga yielded about 260 gallons of juice. Yeast and yeast nutrient have been added and the fermentation process has begun. The next grapes to be harvested will be the Traminette which are the other white grapes that we have on the right hand side of the road as you come up the hill. These will probably be ready to pick the week after homecoming. The Chambourcin have started turning purple but won’t be ready to harvest until September.

We will be staying open through the weekend of December 17/18 and available nightly (call first at 573-222-3709) the week of Christmas for any last minute gifts. We have gift baskets and gift cards for that wine connisuer on your list. We will then be closed Christmas day through the first weekend in March. Although we hate to close, we feel that this time will give us the opportunity to plan for a great 2010 year. We truely appreciate each of you that have visited the winery this first year and hope to see you in the coming year.

I remember Larry during my college days. He was my English Comp instructor at TRCC. He and I are amazed that I now own my own publishing business and wrote the biography, 18 Minutes and a Lifetime: A Biography of Christopher Dale Sifford.

For those of you that have not ordered your copy of Chris' biography, I have extended the special pricing through December 15. You can order your copy through my web site, PS Publishing.

I will report more news tomorrow and hopefully will have some photos to add to the photo gallery.

It was a relaxing evening last night for guests at the Indian Hills Winery. Nicole, Martie, and April Sifford greeted and served their guests, while Dan Wiethop played his soothing sounds.

I was informed by Nicole that they do plan on staying open during the winter months if possible. So, if you are looking for a place to relax for a couple of hours, consider Indian Hills Winery this winter. Nicole tells me that they may not serve full meals during the winter months.

Some harvesting of the beautiful vineyards began a few weeks ago. They expect to harvest again in 2-3 weeks. Family, friends, and neighbors will join in to help gather the grapes. Even I may try my hand at helping harvest. I”m trying to figure out how I can juggle my notebook and a camera while picking grapes! This is one opportunity I do not want to miss.

Until next time – this is your Indian Hills Unofficial Reporter,
